Understanding the Dangers of Ribaa (Usury) in Islam: A Reminder of Our Obligations to Allah

In today’s world, where the commands and prohibitions of Allah (SWT) are often overlooked, it is more important than ever to remind ourselves and others of our Islamic duties to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). This reminder is especially critical when sins clearly forbidden in Islam—such as ribaa (usury or interest)—are normalized and even considered acceptable by some.

Engaging in ribaa is not a minor transgression; it is one of the gravest sins in Islamic teachings. The Qur’an explicitly warns of the severe consequences, stating that those who deal in ribaa are in direct opposition to Allah and His Messenger—an act so serious that it is likened to a declaration of war from Allah Himself.

As Muslims, we must stay vigilant, seek knowledge, and promote awareness about the harmful effects of ribaa, both spiritually and socially. Returning to the guidance of the Qur’an and Sunnah is essential to protecting ourselves and our communities from falling into such major sins.
