The origin of Ayyuhal Walad began when a devoted student came to Imam Al-Ghazali after spending many years studying under his guidance. During that time, the student had inherited and mastered various branches of knowledge and had completed reading many of Al-Ghazali’s works, including Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din. Despite this, he still felt unsatisfied.
When the student was about to part from his teacher, he approached Imam Al-Ghazali to seek advice. This moment reflects the proper etiquette (adab) of a student toward a teacher. He did not merely come to bid farewell, but respectfully requested a written farewell counsel (nasihat wada‘) so that he could always remember and reflect upon his teacher’s guidance.
Imam Al-Ghazali graciously accepted the request of his beloved student and wrote a series of heartfelt counsels, which later became a small yet profound book. Each passage begins with the phrase “Ayyuhal Walad”, meaning “O my dear child.” This expression reflects the deep closeness between teacher and student, resembling the bond between a father and his child. For this reason, Al-Ghazali consistently addressed his student with the words “Ayyuhal Walad,” — “O my beloved son.”
The identity of the student for whom Ayyuhal Walad was written remains unknown. He is, in a sense, an unsung hero, through whom Muslims today continue to benefit from this timeless work.
Imam Al-Ghazali begins his advice with exceptionally beautiful words, addressing his student with affection and sincere supplication:
“O my beloved child, may Allah grant you a long life in obedience to Him, and may He guide you with ease along the path of those whom He loves.”
