Rabbana is an essential Qurʾān-based resource for the supplicant.
Prayer is at the heart of all true worship.
In these Qurʾānic verses we can see how the prophets and believing men and women called on God for their needs, and unfailingly turned to the Creator with glorifications and supplications (duʿāʾs). With prayer we repel grief, despondency, and fear (khawf) and replace them with hope (rajāʾ), confidence, and trust (tawakkul). Supplication is also a way of seeking forgiveness (istighfār) for our sins and purifying the heart (ṭahārat al-qalb). According to Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya the speech of God in the majestic Qurʾān is powerful and transformative, it contains His complete cure, beneficent protection, guiding light, and all-embracing mercy.
Given the superiority, immediacy, and the special power in the words of the Qurʾān, how excellent then are these duʿāʾs that come straight from our Lord, and are collected here in this book, Rabbanā. The Qurʾānic verses that are also duʿāʾs, those read by the prophets themselves—Adam, Noah, Abraham, Lot, Job, Shuʿayb, Jonah, Moses, David, Solomon, Zechariah, Jesus, and Muḥammad—have
been carefully chosen for their general application and context. These prayers are extraordinarily relevant to and resonate with aspects of our emotional and social experiences today. By reaching out to God with gravity and sincerity, we can form a profound connection with Him and through these supplications call upon God,s intervention in our lives. One of the most universal and innate of human behaviours is the impulse to pray, to ask the Creator for help, for His pardon, relief,
for His guidance, forgiveness, protection, support, and blessings. Prayer, whether spoken silently or aloud, alone or with others, has always been at core of spiritual wellness.
The Qurʾānic duʿāʾs can be read by themselves, in conjunction with duʿāʾs from the Sunna or with our own words in a private talk (munājāt) with God. The book also contains etiquettes for supplication, including a detailed listing of the opportune times and states when these duʿāʾs are likely to be accepted and the prohibited manners and situations to be avoided.
The accompanying CD contains all the Qurʾānic verses in the book to aid effective learning and memorisation.
